A seasoned performer, she has appeared on the Grand Ole Opry radio and television shows, and shared the stage with bluegrass legends such as Alison Krauss, IIIrd Tyme Out, Sam Bush, Mountain Heart and Ricky Skaggs.

Reston, VA—One June 26, Reston Concerts on the Town presents an evening of Brazilian jazz with local jazz favorite Chuck Redd and special guests singer Maucha Adnet and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca. Reston Concerts on the Town is a free concert series that takes place at the Reston Town Center Pavilion every Saturday night, June 5^th thru August 28^th, from 7:30 p.m. – 10 p.m., rain or shine.

Chuck Redd (www.chuckredd.com) is a veteran jazz musician who performs on drums and vibraphone. He began performing and recording internationally in 1980 when he joined the Charlie Byrd Trio and is featured on more than 70 recordings. Redd and the late legendary guitarist Charlie Byrd had performed together for many years at this Reston Town Center concert series.

Maucha Adnet, born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, performed, toured, and recorded with legendary composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and his band Banda Nova from 1984 – 1994. Her husband, drummer Duduka Da Fonseca, also hails from Rio and has performed and recorded with Jobim and other top Brazilian musicians. Adnet and Da Fonseca will be featured in this jazz quintet, along with Chuck’s brother, Robert, on piano and Leonardo Cioglia on bass.

Reston Concerts on the Town features talented local and national acts. The concerts are sponsored by the Reston Town Center Association with support from the Fairfax Times. This year’s line-up features a diverse array of music including swing, jazz, Celtic, Latin fusion, New Orleans zydeco; Afro-Cuban, and Motown.

Reston, VA - Open Your Heart to Public Art in Reston. Join the Initiative for Public Art-Reston (IPAR) and Hunters Woods Elementary School PTA for some great, family-friendly fun, Monday, March 1, 4 to 7 p.m., ice skating at the Reston Town Center Pavilion. Admission is $10 and includes the skates rental fee.

The skate, rescheduled because of snow, is open to the public, and proceeds from admission, hot chocolate and cookie sales will benefit IPAR’s first public art project—the creation of a permanent Reston underpass art work involving an artist-in-residence who will engage students from Hunters Woods Elementary School, a Fairfax County magnet school for the arts and sciences. This first Public Art Project is launched by IPAR in collaboration with project co-sponsors, Reston Community Center and Reston Association.

Public art has been an integral part of Reston’s history since its inception. IPAR was formed to inspire a new commitment to public art and to bring world-class art to the community on a project-by-project basis. The underpass project starts this exciting, long-term endeavor. This project is funded in part by the Arts Council of Fairfax County, supported by Fairfax County; the Virginia Commission for the Arts; and the National Endowment for the Arts.

IPAR, an incorporated non-profit composed of civic leaders representing all of Reston’s key community organizations, “imagines public art throughout Reston that is world-renowned, inspires the community and engages the mind and senses.”

The mission of Initiative for Public Art – Reston Inc. is to create, and advocate for, a master plan for public art in Reston, Virginia.  Through its collaborative outreach and a Board of Directors comprised of a broad spectrum of local community organizations, Initiative will create a persuasive blue print and vision for the acquisition and maintenance of unique and prominent art throughout Reston. Key IPAR partners are the Reston Association, the Reston Community Center, the Greater Reston Art Center, the Reston Town Center Association, the Reston Chamber of Commerce, the Arts Council of Fairfax County and the League of Reston Artists.

Reston, VA The Bike Lane in Reston and Burke, Virginia has partnered with Trek Bikes and Driveway 2 Driveway to challenge a person to give up their car for one year and ride a bike.  Starting March 1 The Bike Lane will be accepting online applications from people who are ready to go by bike and want to tell the world about the benefits and challenges  of doing so.  The person who stands out as the most committed, most challenged by giving up their car, and has the most desire to make it happen will earn a new Trek Ride+ electric assist commuter bike; decked out with a rack, panniers, and lights.  The Bike Lane will also provide other accessories such as clothing, riding gear, and commuting support to the winner of the challenge.

Applicants must commit to using a bike for a minimum of 80% of their transportation needs and to blog and use other social media to journal about their experience.  Trek Bicycles is planning to video document a day in the life of the winners’ commuting by bike experience.  In addition, Driveway 2 Driveway will offer to sell the persons car for free during the one year challenge.  “The person who accepts this challenge might not be ready to give up their car immediately.   But you never know, they may decide that they don’t need their car after a month or so of going by bike” states Alison Lynch of Driveway 2 Driveway.

The Bike Lane will present the bike and gear to the winner of the challenge at their annual Cyclefest event on April 24 at the Reston Town Center.  Cyclefest is a day dedicated to celebrate cycling.  The day kicks off with Paul’s Ride for Life; a fundraising ride for the Washington Regional Transplant Community, in honor of Paul Rossmeissl .  The Cyclefest Expo activities begin at 10 am and include bike demos, kids safety rodeo, BMX stunt shows, bike fashion show, and more.  Cyclefest will finish at 4 pm with the presentation of the Trek Ride + bike and other gear to the winner of the “Give Up Your Car for One Year Challenge”.

“The Bike Lane is really excited about this challenge” says Anne Mader, co owner of The Bike Lane with husband Todd Mader “With the higher gas prices and terrible traffic congestion we hope to use this challenge to get people thinking about using their bike for commuting, going to the store, and running other errands.   By providing someone with everything they need to give up their car and go by bike, we may even change someone’s life!”

The Trek Ride + electric assist bike is new for 2010 from Trek Bicycle Company.  The bike has various levels of assistance that corresponds to the rider’s effort.  This makes longer commutes easy, heavy loads lighter, and long hills shorter but does not take away from the physical effort needed to move the bike forward.  “This bike helps to make going by bike easier without taking the enjoyment and freedom away from the cycling experience” states Adam Lewandowski, Manager of The Bike Lane’s Reston store.

Reston, VA – Over forty children will be overjoyed this holiday season when they see a shiny new bike and helmet under their Christmas tree. For the fourth consecutive year The Bike Lane collected monetary donations to purchase over $8,500 worth of high quality safe Trek bikes for needy children.  Local businesses and local cycling clubs also joined in the effort. “It is great to have many local partnerships coming together to support such a great cause!” says Anne Mader, co-owner of The Bike Lane.  The Bike Lane staff rolled the bikes over to the U.S. Marines on site for their annual Toys for Tots drive with MIX 107.3 FM at Reston Town Center on December 11.  “I remember getting a bike just like that for Christmas!” said an excited onlooker, commenting on a shiny pink bike with a white flowered basket and colorful streamers.

This annual tradition was the idea of Holly Jackson, who worked for a company that held an annual Toys for Tots drive every year. Jackson started to collect money from other employees to purchase bikes instead of toys. “A new bicycle is the epitome of a Christmas present for a child. Who doesn’t remember that special moment when you saw your first bike under the tree?” says Jackson, who is an avid cyclist. The Bike Lane partnered with Jackson over four years ago in an effort to get more donations to purchase bikes.   Other local businesses such as EX2 Adventures, Graceful Edge, Positively Chiropractic, Sports and Spinal Physical Therapy and cycling groups including the Mid Atlantic Off Road Enthusiasts, the FBI Race Team and the Quantico Mountain Bike Team all helped get the word out about the bike fundraiser.  Over the last four years, The Bike Lane, its customers, and partners have donated almost 150 bikes and helmets to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots. “It’s been a tough economy the last few years and thanks to the generosity of  our business and individual sponsors, many children will have an extra special Christmas this year” states Jackson.

The bicycle is a part of childhood. “Being able to give a needy child a brand new bike is an amazing feeling.  A bike is fun and brings freedom and independence to every child.  We want to bring this joy to as many children as possible this holiday season.” states Mader.
